Enjoy the Santa Monica Pier

July 08, 2016

Remember that scene in Forrest Gump when Forrest runs to the Pacific Ocean and says, "I figured since I made it this far I might as well turn around and keep on going?" That sunset view he enjoys was at the end of the Santa Monica pier. The Santa Monica Pier is just a twenty-five minute drive from the Chamberlain West Hotel.

The Pier's iconic entrance boasts "Sport, Fishing, Boating, Cafes." It has been featured in movies, television shows, and books for decades. In 2009, the pier celebrated its 100 year anniversary. At the pier you'll find Pacific Park, an amusement park for the whole family. Pacific Park is home to the world's only solar-powered Ferris Wheel. There are twelve other rides, including a roller coaster, which provides stunning ocean views. The best part? It's free!

On Thursday nights in the summer, the pier also hosts free music from 7 - 10 PM. If you show up between 4 - 7, you can great happy hour specials at the pubs and restaurants. Each Thursday features a different genre of music. Dance group Rufus Du Sol headlines the second Thursday and indie rock group, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, preforms the first week of September. Visit santamonicapier.org for the full lineup.

The beach at Santa Monica is just as famous as the pier. Known to locals as State Beach, you'll find 3 miles of soft sand -- so there's no trouble finding a spot. You might recognize the beach as the legendary backdrop of the popular television show Baywatch.

The town of Santa Monica is very walkable and many visitors choose to rent a bike to get around. If it's exercise you're after, consider the bike path that heads inland to Torrance. At 22 miles, it's the longest bike path in the world!

When we think of movies we think of Hollywood. However, Santa Monica is a rich in movie magic as its neighbor to the east. Enjoy the Santa Monica Pier and soak up the California sun.
